Under the direction of the Multi-Stakeholder Forum, five Multi-Stakeholder Sector Working Groups (MSWGs) have been established to consult widely and to analyze in depth the sectoral requirements for an effective National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and Plan of Action for Nigeria.
Working Group members have been appointed based on recommendations from the MF. Members provide depth and credibility in their area of expertise and have been chosen from among federal government, states, civil society, private sector, expert groups. In addition, one policy researcher has been identified to support the work of each working group.
These Multi-stakeholder Sector Working Groups will provide the Multi-Stakeholder Forum (MF) with crucial sector-specific information relevant across the ago-ecological zones of the country, and provide a report on impacts and adaptation to climate change in their sector. Which will then be incorporated in the National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and Plan of Action. In developing their reports, working groups will:
-
Take account of the implications of climate change impacts throughout Nigeria, being particularly sensitive to climate change impacts on the most vulnerable communities, and recognizing that adaptation in many ways is ‘local’
-
Conduct special inquires and review all available and applicable knowledge, including knowledge generated in Nigeria
-
Provide an avenue for the government, CSOs, private sector businesses, academia and others to contribute to the process
-
Integrate the impact of climate change on youths, vulnerable groups, and both men and women
-
Review diverse options for national and localized adaptation and risk reduction
-
Clarify roles and responsibilities for implementing the recommendations and evaluating the impact of the Adaptation Strategy and Plan of Action on livelihoods and sustainable development.
