The development of a National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and Plan of Action provides a process for Nigeria to identify priority activities that respond to Nigeria’s urgent and immediate needs with regard to adaptation to climate change. The Adaptation Strategy and Plan of Action will take into account existing coping strategies at the grassroots level, and build upon that to identify priority activities, and where possible uses predictive climate scenarios to assess future vulnerability and long-term policy requirements. Prominence, however, is given to community-level input as an important source of information, recognizing that grassroots communities are the main stakeholders. The process will be sector specific, action-oriented, country-driven, flexible and based on national circumstances.
Four key partners have come together to support development of this adaptation strategy and plan of action. These are the:
- Special Climate Change Unit of the Federal Ministry of Environment
- Building Nigeria's Response to Climate Change Project by the Nigerian Environmental Study Action Team
- Nigeria's Climate Action Network
- Heinrich Boell Foundation
These key partners have committed to developing the adaptation strategy through a comprehensive and consultative process (download flowchart here [PDF 108KB]) and have established a multistakeholder forum and secretariat to guide the development process.
